Is it better to go through a mortgage broker?

We get asked this all the time. And the answer is ‘of course it is!’. But you dear reader, won’t and shouldn’t simply accept that as our reply.  So read on and we’ll explain why it’s better for you to go through a mortgage broker.

Why have a dog and bark yourself?

The mortgage market is flooded with offers and deals from hundreds of lenders.  Each of those offers comes with certain criteria.  In order to find the best possible deal for yourself, you’ll need to work through each offer according to your situation and criteria (long-term, short term, fixed, variable etc) to find the best deal for you.  A mortgage broker will do all this leg work for you. Woof.

A whole of market broker gives you choice

The clue is the phrase ‘whole of market’.  If you approach a lender directly, they will only offer you a mortgage from their own suite of products. And so they should.  However, there is always a possibility that there is a better deal for you somewhere in the market – and a whole of market broker will provide access to that.

Finding specialist lenders

There are specialist lenders across the UK and smaller lenders that often are unknown or unheard of. A whole of market mortgage broker will know where these lenders lurk and will be able to tap into them if they suit your particular situation.

A whole of market broker won’t cost additional fees.

Yes, you read that right!

A broker will sometimes be paid via the lender, and in other instances, will charge you a fee. But that’s not something to fear.  In every instance no matter how you obtain your mortgage you will pay set up fees – sometimes more, sometimes less. The fees may be paid across the life of your borrowings or be paid in a more obvious lump sum upfront.  By going directly to a lender these fees may not be as obvious as they might otherwise have been, but rest assured that you will be paying them.

The question as to whether it’s best to go direct to a lender or to use a mortgage broker is asked time and again.  We say, what’s not to love about a broker? We do the work for you. We ensure that you get the best possible deal for your situation and we don’t necessarily cost you any more than if you went directly to a lender.
